Answer all questions.

1. Write short notes on any four (04): 4 x 5 = 20

a) Irony

Ans) In irony, a sentence means the exact opposite of what it says. Shakespeare's Julius Caesar has a lot of irony that is very well done. In this play, Antonio says that Brutus is a man of honour. The word "honourable" here is meant to mean the exact opposite of what it sounds like.

b) Paradox

Ans) A paradox is a person, thing, or situation that has two things that seem to go against each other. It can also mean a statement that has two contradictory ideas that make it seem impossible or unlikely to be true, even if it is.

c) Simile and Metaphor

Ans) A simile is a comparison between two things that are not the same. The two are put next to each other because they have some things in common. A simile uses the words like, as, or so.

In a metaphor, two things that are not the same are compared, but the similarity between them is not made clear. It's just an idea. For example, when we say, "He fought like a lion," we are using a simile. When we say, "He was a lion in the fight," we are using a metaphor to say the same thing.

e) Euphemism

Ans) This is a Greek word, and its literal meaning is "to speak well." In everyday life, we have to talk about things and ideas that might be scary, offensive, or disagreeable according to our social norms. So, when we talk about them, we use a term that isn't as clear. The most common ones are the words we use to talk about death. We say, "the man passed away yesterday" instead of "the man died yesterday." When an insurance agent says, "if something happens to you," he really means "if you die."

2. Explain with examples: 4 x 5 = 20

a) Dialect

Ans) A dialect is a type of a language that only a small group of people speak. The accent of a person is part of their dialect. In this way, a person's accent can sometimes give away where they are from. Standard dialect, southern American dialect, African American Vernacular English, and Appalachian dialect are all types of dialects.

b) Accent

Ans) An accent is when a certain part of something, usually a word, is stressed or emphasised. The first syllable of the word "doofus" should be stressed: DOO-fuss. Accent comes from the Latin word accentus, which means "the tone of singing." In speech, we use accent to emphasise different things.

c) Style

Ans) Style lets an author share his content in the way he wants, instead of just giving information. For example, let's say an author wants to write about a girl picking a flower: "She picked a red rose from the ground." The rose she picked from the ground was scarlet.

d) Code mixing

Ans) Code-mixing is when linguistic units like phrases, words, and morphemes from one language are used in an utterance of another language. Here's an example of code-mixing: "I watched a movie last night and the next day I met Sudha."

e) Code switching

Ans) People sometimes use the term "code-switching" to mean switching between different dialects, styles, or registers of speech. This term is also used in the study of sociolinguistics. People who speak African American Vernacular English do this when they move from less formal to more formal settings.

3. Prepare your Curriculum Vitae in about 250 words. 20

Ans)

4. Enumerate the essentials of oral communication at a formal level. 20

Ans) The essentials of oral communication at a formal level are as follows:

To improve our ability to speak in a formal or advanced setting, we must pay attention to both:

  1. The content

  2. The delivery of our speech.

Some of the most common parts of what we say are our feelings and thoughts. Finding the right balance between different emotions is the key to being able to speak well at an emotional time, like a goodbye or a welcome. Finding the right kind of praise (for example, praise that seems sincere and not like an attempt to flatter) or the right kind of criticism is hard and takes careful thought. Again, if we want to change someone's mind or tell them about a new product, organisation, or event, we need to think carefully about what we want to say before we say it.

But you can't just think about the content of your speech in terms of how it makes you feel or what it makes you think. That is, our speech is not just about how we feel and what we think. We also have to think about the words we use to say what we mean. We can think of this as the words we use when we talk. It's also a matter of style in language. Our language style is based on how well we know a language's vocabulary, how well we know its idioms and turns of phrase, and how well we know how to put sentences together.

Now, let's talk about how the speech is delivered:

  1. Articulation or speaking skills in general.

Even if a speech has the best ideas or language, the audience won't care if the speaker is hard to hear or talks too slowly. On the other hand, even the best delivery or wording won't keep someone's attention if the emotion and thought are boring. A good speaker has both style and substance, or something to say and a way of saying it.

  1. Language-specific articulatory or speech skills.

5. Differentiate between information and communication? 20

Ans) The person who gets the message has to make some guesses about what it means and who wrote it. Especially because of the media, this kind of inference is often needed. This is because the media make it possible for a message to live on without the person who made it. In a society where people talk to each other, the orator, poet, or conversationalist must be in the same room as his audience. The people listening to the speaker may know him or her or at least be able to talk to and ask questions of him or her. People who carved a message into a rock or drew a picture with charcoal in a cave thousands of years ago used these tools to make a message that exists today without the person who made it. This is how mediated communication started. We don't know who made the cave paintings 35,000 years ago or why they were made (there are suggestions that these were created as part of magic rituals for the safe return of hunters).

Sless says, "Everything in the environment could be seen as a source of information, but only those things that are asked questions about will be seen as communication." He says, "This makes it clear that not everything that was meant to be a message will be seen as such, and there will also be times when information from the environment is mistakenly seen as a message." He uses the "wink/twitch" to show how easy this is. Imagine you are talking to someone who quickly closes and opens one eye from time to time. At first, you might think this was a wink, that the person was purposely closing and opening an eye to show that what he was saying was funny or satirical and not to be taken seriously. But if the "wink" happened more than once, and it happened at times when there was nothing funny about it, you might think it was a "twitch," which is an involuntary spasm of the muscles that control the eye. Then you would stop trying to figure out what it means and try to ignore it as much as possible. In English, the rapid opening and closing of the eye is called a "twitch" if it is not meant to communicate, but a "wink" if it is.

Lastly, keep in mind that there is a grey area where the communicator may not be sending a message on purpose, but the recipient can still get one. It is said that moods and attitudes can be "communicated" through body language. In the very first block of this course, we looked at some common gestures and other forms of body language. The important thing to remember is that the sender may not even be aware of how his or her body language shows that he or she is bored or interested.

8. Outline the few essentials to be kept in mind while taking part in a Debate Competition. 10

Ans) The few essentials to be kept in mind while taking part in a Debate Competition are as follows:

Work Together: When playing in groups, it's always best to work together and talk as much as you need to. If everyone on your team wants the same thing, each person should be able to put their own effort into making it happen. If you don't know how to get ready for a class debate, you'll find out how here. Your team should also get the information they need and start working on your topic, looking for arguments and evidence.

Write Individual Speeches: Each speaker should have time to think of ideas before the group talks about anything. They will write down their own arguments and proof. It helps everyone focus and come up with as many points of disagreement as possible when talking with others. Then, you have to talk about all of the speeches as a group and decide which arguments are best for your discussion. Everyone on the team should have a chance to say what they think.

Analyse the Evidence: You need to write a speech based on facts, and you shouldn't use arguments that aren't backed up by evidence. Because of this, you need to read your evidence before you use it to back up your point of view. Learn how to find evidence if you want to get ready for a debate competition. Get information from online databases, books, and other sources that may have information on your topic.

Arguments for Both Sides: Just because you want to argue against a certain statement doesn't mean you shouldn't also find arguments for it. You need to be ready for what your opponent will say, so try to guess what they might say. By doing it, you get ready for what your opponents might say. Get help from people who have done it before if you don't know how to do it well and where to find evidence for both sides.

Prepare Your Speeches: If you have never been in a discussion like this before, it will be hard for you to get started. Because of this, if you prepare your speech well, it will help you win. Everyone on your team should write their own speech, and then you should put them all together. Most likely, you won't have much time to write arguments and talk about them with your team. That's why you should learn how to manage your time as a college student and how to finish complicated tasks in a few minutes.
