Answer all the questions
Q1 Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
During our growing up years we as children were taught - both at home and school - to worship the photos and idols of the Gods of our respective religions. When we grew a little older, we were to read holy books like the Bhagwad Gita, Bible and Quran; we were told that there are a lot of life lessons to be learnt from these holy books. We were then introduced to stories from our mythologies which taught us about ethics and morality- what is good and what is bad. I also learnt to be respectful towards my parents who made my life comfortable with their hard work and love and care, and my teachers who guided me to become a good student and a responsible citizen. Much later in life, I realised that though we learn much from our respective holy books, there is a lot to learn from our surroundings. This realization dawned upon me when I learnt to enquire and explore. Everything around us- the sun, the moon, the stars, rain, rivers, stones, rocks, birds, plants and animals – teach us many valuable life lessons. No wonder that besides the scriptures, in many cultures nature is also worshipped. The message that we get is to save our environment and maintain ecological balance. People are taught to live in harmony with nature and recognize that there is God in all aspects of nature.
Nature is a great teacher. A river never stops flowing. If it finds an obstacle in its way in the form of a heavy rock, the river water fights to remove it from its path or finds an alternative path to move ahead. This teaches us to be progressive in life, and keep the fighting spirit alive. Snakes are worshipped as they eat insects in the field that can hurt our crops, thus protecting the grains for us. In fact, whatever we worship is our helper and makes our lives easy for us. There are many such examples in nature, but we are not ready to learn a lesson. Overcome with greed, we are destroying nature. As a result, we face natural disasters like droughts, floods and landslides. We don’t know that nature is angry with us. However, it is never too late to learn. If we learn to respect nature, the quality of our life will improve.

Q8. ii The role of Media.
Ans) Media plays a crucial role in shaping a healthy democracy. Media makes us aware of various social, political and economical activities happening around the world. It is like a mirror, which shows us or strives to show us the bare truth and harsh realities of life.
The media has undoubtedly evolved and become more active over the years. It is the media only who reminds politicians about their unfulfilled promises at the time of elections. T.V news channels excessive coverage during elections helps people, especially illiterates, in electing the right person to the power. This reminder compels politicians to be up to their promises in order to remain in power.
Television and radio have made a significant achievement in educating rural illiterate masses in making them aware of all the events in their language. Coverage of exploitative malpractices of village heads and moneylenders has helped in taking stringent actions against them by attracting government’s attention.
Impact of Media
The media's impact is notable. Excessive coverage of sensitive news has led to riots. Illiterates are more likely to provoke than literates. It breeds apathy and insensitivity. For example, in the Dhananjoy Chatterjee case, the excessive media coverage led to the deaths of many youngsters who replicated the hanging method. There are numerous harmful effects. This type of news should be handled with extreme caution.
Commercialization has increased media rivalry. To outdo each other, print media have often published articles, cover stories, etc. about sex.
Experts in the media think this is a cheap way to attract readers who are addicted to new TV news channels that have sprung up recently.
Conclusion
No one, including the media, is perfect. I am not criticising the media, but rather stating that it may yet develop to meet the expectations of the people it serves. What is a democracy without active and impartial media? In a democracy, the media keeps the government active. It has evolved from a simple news source to a daily necessity. It has evolved and gotten more responsible through time. The current media revolution has helped individuals make informed decisions, ushering in a new era of democracy.
