Q 1. Choose any two media theories of your choice and analyse how it fits in the current media scenario. (400 words)


1. Authoritarian Theory of Media

A publication based on authoritarian ideals does not question the authority of the state. Even though journalists are free to report, they do not publish or broadcast anything that does not paint a favourable picture of the state. This thesis supports the concept that doubting the authority of the state is harmful to a nation's morale. This type of press employs censorship in order to improve the public's impression of the government. As a result, there is no such thing as free speech because the government controls what is published in the media.


Authoritarian Theory of Media Examples

The media during Adolf Hitler's reign is a notable example of this. Hitler used propaganda to ensure that his views were widely spread, in addition to exerting control over what was written in the press. Another example can be found in Uganda and Zambia in the 1990s, when journalists who asked difficult questions during interviews were routinely sentenced to prison time. A more recent example can be found in the North Korean news, which frequently delivers erroneous accounts of events in other parts of the world and only very rarely allows residents to access resources that are not sourced in North Korea. In addition, there are countries that are transitioning away from authoritarian rule. For example, in the twenty-first century, Burma began to relax press restrictions.


2. Libertarian Theory of Media

The freedom of the press is an important component of libertarian thought since it allows for the dissemination of information. As a result of this, it is also referred to as the normative theory of mass communication. The outlets of mass media have completed editorial independence and may publish any news or information they deem appropriate. The country's press serves an important role as the watchdog of the country's communities and societies. The WikiLeaks platform may on occasion make secret documents available to the general public. Because of this, the governments of many nations around the world do not permit the practise of libertarian press systems, which can influence the political parties that ultimately constitute the government.


Libertarian Theory of Media Examples

Ans) Since its creation in the 1990s, the Internet has greatly impacted print media and journalism. Few journalists wanted to be identified with the Internet at the start of the decade. In 1994, some journalists believed the Internet would transform their work.


By 1997, the Internet was a vital aspect of journalism. Internet has profoundly changed journalism. It's a publication medium and reporting tool. It's a focus of journalism education. Journalists' social responsibility to inform the public and journalism ethics have been questioned. Because the Internet is a global media, its global impact has been questioned. The Internet's invasiveness, especially in journalism, has sparked debate among scholars, journalists, and the public.


Internet Proliferation in India

India was the second-largest online market in the world, after China, with over 900 million users. Despite the vast number and ongoing improvements in accessibility, the country's internet penetration rate was slightly under 50%, which was below the global average. By the end of 2020, India is expected to have 639 million monthly active internet users, thanks to the coronavirus lockdown that has kept people inside their homes with little else to do.


The number of monthly active internet users, currently estimated at 574 million, has grown annually by 24%, corresponding to a penetration rate of 41% in 2019. These observations come from Kantar, a data, insights, and consultancy company, and their ICUBETM report.


Rural India is leading the digital revolution, with internet usage growing by 45% there in 2019 as opposed to just 11% in urban areas. Rural India currently has 264 million internet users, and by 2020, that number is anticipated to rise to 304 million. With 2.5 times increase in population penetration over the past four years, local language material and video are the driving forces behind the internet explosion in rural India. Additionally, mobile is the preferred device as it is used by all active users to access the internet.

The annual tracking study measures internet usage by demographic, activity, and device sectors to assess India's evolving digital ecosystem. The survey, which was started in 1998, included over 75,000 respondents from 390 cities and other urban areas as well as more than 1,300 villages. Lakshadweep is the only Union Territory and state that is not represented in the study.


Approximately 84% of consumers utilise the internet for entertainment. In addition to convenient content availability across devices and on-the-go affordable internet services, the year 2019 saw a surge in OTT (over-the-top streaming), both audio and video, driven by original content and cricket. This led to a significant increase in entertainment consumption for the entire year.


Users have been forced to experiment with different digital solutions as a result of the coronavirus lockdown, some out of choice and some out of need. In times of social isolation, the convenience of accessing services and taking advantage of their benefits from the comfort of home will continue to encourage users to adopt and use multiple Internet services, according to a statement from Biswapriya Bhattacharjee, vice president of Kantar's insights division. She added that the year 2020 is likely to witness a tectonic shift in both Internet adoption and frequency of usage.

Ans) The newspapers used here are two dailies, one in English (Times of India) and one in Punjabi (Ajit, a local newspaper). The Times of India is an Indian English-language daily newspaper owned by the Times Group. It is the third-biggest newspaper in India by circulation and the world's largest selling English-language daily. The Ajit is a Punjab-based daily newspaper published largely in Jalandhar, India, and is owned by the Sadhu Singh Hamdard trust. The publications cover current events in business, politics, sports, fashion, Punjabi and Hindu cinema, as well as national and international news items from around the world.

Concept and Idea of Podcasts for Children

Q 5. Conceptualise and plan a fund raiser to promote tribal art through digital means. (400 words)

Ans) The Adivasi Arts Trust has finished ten years of work devoted to leveraging digital media to promote Indian tribal art and tales. The artists acquire the skills necessary to adapt their artistic and oral traditions to animated form, making them much more broadly available.


Children in India are fans of animation. However, they haven't yet created any of their own stories. The Adivasi Arts Trust's first compilation of animated tribal folktales from India, "Tales of the Tribes," was created through collaborations between traditional and contemporary artists. This series consists of five tales about native Indians. Participants in tribal animation workshops held in Nagaland, Sikkim, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh chose the stories.

In order to broadcast "Tales of the Tribes" for local and international audiences, the Trust now needs funding to master the films into seven languages, including five indigenous languages in addition to Hindi and English.


The money donated through this campaign will be used to cover the final technical expenses associated with creating several DVDs and mastering them, as well as to plan screenings and workshops for students in Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Manipur. Any additional funding will aid in the project's continued outreach to a wider audience. This satisfies the Trust's ethical obligation to return the stories to its partners and the local communities.

We started a company named Art Culture Studio in December 2020 and met with more than 200 artists and cultural entrepreneurs. As of September 2021, the Tribal Movement is active.
